Paolo Mangiola

Paolo Mangiola is a dancer, choreographer and dance educator and the Artistic Director of Zfin Malta, the national dance company of Malta.
Interested in the concept of contemporaneity, Paolo looks at choreography as a system of instructions applicable to different contexts. He explores with his work the border between dance and ordinary movement, drawing inspiration from various artistic sources such as cinema, theatre, visual art, street culture, new trends, web and emerging movements.

His choreographic works have been performed in London at The Place, Sadler's Wells and the Linbury Studio - Covent Garden, as well as in contemporary art galleries and urban spaces in Rome, Milan, Malta, Poland, Norway and Germany.

Past positions include curating the contemporary dance department at the Scuola del Balletto di Roma, guest teacher of choreography and dance history at the University of Malta and a full time teacher of choreography at English National Ballet School, London. In November 2014 he was appointed associate choreographer at Balletto di Roma, the contemporary dance company in Rome.
During his career as a professional dancer he danced for companies such as Aterballetto, Tanzthatre Nuernberg, WM|RD and Cullberg Ballet where he performed works of Mauro Bigonzetti, Jacopo Godani, Wayne McGregor, Rui Horta, Daniela Kruz, Stejn Cellis, Jorma Elo and Deborah Hay. He completed his studies at The Place, London with an MA in choreography and performed with Wayne McGregor Dance.

In Summer 2017, Paolo was appointed Artistic Director of ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble, the National Dance Company of Malta. Paolo's first full-evening production for the company, Voyager, received its world premiere in Valletta in November, 2018. More recently, he has Voyager (2019); the dance film Aħna (2020); 21 Dances for the 21st Century, premiere in Valletta, Malta in 2020. In 2021, he will create Sunrise Mass and Quartets in Motion, both for the company.
In May 2019, Paolo created Song of the Earth for the Ballet of Szczecin Opera in Poland which in 2020 won Poland's the Kiepura Prize for set designers Martyna Kander and Julia Skrzynecka.
Paolo continues to investigate the way in which dance, as a movement practice and as an art form, develops and changes through an on going dialogue with contemporary discourses in the context of our interconnected world.
